Demonware wasn't used in the PC version AFAIK. Plus, they weren't 'recently acquired by Activision' - that happened years ago!
2007... centuries, in Internet time
In one of the articles, I think I saw a reference to them using Demonware... which would make sense, but... who knows. Do you have any more details on IW.net? I'm sure a lot of folks would like to know more!
Although i hate cheaters i think its not that legal to bann people from an account which is payed for and inorder to play singelplayer Steam is needed, so if someone is smart enough they got some lawsuits comin. One can say its there own fault, ok, but legaly not that correct.
I personally think that banning a players Steam account is the best way to deal with cheating. Firstly I'm pretty sure that hacks are a direct violation of the EULA and secondly its just downright dirty. If a cheater knows he will lose £100's worth of games as a result of his actions then he simply won't cheat. And if he DOES then he KNEW the consequences and he deserves no less than the full force of Steam's wrath.
One of the strategies proposed by Steam is the tar and feathers approach for cheaters. They can still play the game but when playing online, they're confined to playing with other cheaters. Enjoy! I hope that they don't encounter false-positive cheating though... much like death penalty, it sucks alot when you're wrong.
The Avira false-positive is nothing new in the sense that anti-virus software sometimes get in the way. This made the news for MW2 because that game is incredibly successful. We've had issues with AVG, Norton and a slew of others in the past on some of our games and had to report the false-positive to get the issues resolved. It can also occur anytime AFTER the game is released because the AVs are continuously being updated. And if we recall, a year ago (around November 10th 2008), AVG similarly made the news for flagging a Windows core DLL as a virus and forcing a lot of casual users to reinstall Windows.
I'm sorry but my MW2 singleplayer is not launching when Steam is disabled or with internet shut down, it simply does not launch. Also Steam is sending alot of Spam true the account which is forbidden by Belgian law.
So, what is your point exactly? If you get caught cheating, it shouldn't ban the account; it should ban the only the privileges to play online with non-cheating players. But again, this should be done only when there is no doubt whatsoever that the player is indeed cheating.
As for the 'spam' - which it isn't since you've accepted the terms when you subscribed - you could take it up with Steam and ask them not to e-mail you.
Any form of ads is considerd as spam, i have to use (install) Steam in order to play the game, otherwis its a no go, simpel as that, i hate cheaters, its differend than getting caught which i wasn't because i don't, i just pointed to the legal aspect, is when cheaters are not able to play the game anymore but did pay for it, still i wonder if they really are banned, they probable create a differend account and of they go again, sure they have to start at the bottom rank maybe, what do cheaters care about that, after a few rounds they got there rank back.
You didn't read what I wrote.
If they create another account, fine but they'd have to purchase the game again. As for spam, I won't argue with you since you have your own definition of what it is.
1. 2500 accounts were banned from the game.......
Isn't it "accounts" what i'm reading ? Now, if they do a format (and alot of them do), who's going to prove they cheated? The account proves it right, but they create a differend account and they'r game doesn't work and ther's not a single trace on they'r harddrive ever installing MW2, so simpel, they go to the store and they get a copy for free, they can even prove the game doesn't work by bringing the pc to the manager, although they will not have to do this because of the manager can test this from his store. So if Steam account is banned are you still able to play ? Try it, disable ur Steam account and launch MW2 singleplayer..... Mine doesn't work....
I should add a precision:
Valve usually suggests that cheating players should be flagged as such and allowed to play online only against other players. It doesn't necessarily mean that cheating players are banned from playing the game altogether. That's a potentially huge difference and I would assume/hope that this is done on a case-by-case basis. In short, the 2500 banned accounts might not have all received the same kind of penalty. If they disabled the account altogether without reimbursing for mild cheating, then yes, I'd agree with you. If some of the players are conducting malicious activities as some of the reports imply, then banning is fair game, much like when your ISP can close down your Internet access for illegal activities.
Weel it will band you for just nothing. I have not cheated and I got the stats to prove it.
