Borderlands 2 crossplay is something that many fans of that game would like to see in the future. But the Gearbox Software developed title is about to turn 10 in just a few days. With that being said, most Borderlands titles continue to have a community, and Borderlands 2 is no exception.
The Steam charts show just over 2,000 players as of 20 minutes ago. That’s not bad, considering its age and the fact that it is far from being the most recent release by the studio. So is there a possibility that Borderlands 2 crossplay will happen? Will there ever be an upgraded version for the new consoles with that feature?
Here we’ll talk about all the rumors, what fans are asking for, and crossplay.
Is Borderlands 2 Crossplay Happening?
Borderlands 2 is a pretty solid game, but as we said above, the game is about to turn ten in less than three weeks. Its age, plus the fact that the team has Borderlands 3 as its most recent release, is not very good news for the feature, at least on this game.
Borderlands 2 is not even the most recent release, either. The studio dropped Borderlands: The Handsome Collection a while back, which features the Pre-Sequel and Borderlands 2. The package also includes bonus content.
That means if there were any chance of getting crossplay, it would be on a newer version of that game.
Borderlands 3 Does Have It
Borderlands 3 is the studio’s latest release, which took place back in Sept. 2019. That’s nearly three years ago, but 2K and Gearbox have managed to keep the latest release fresh by bringing many new things.
Some months back, Borderlands 3 got a next-gen upgrade with many improvements. Graphical improvements were obviously among the tweaks that Borderlands 3 returned with. But the studio also went all in on crossplay.
In June 2021, the studio posted a blog detailing the crossplay update. The update is what many Borderlands 2 players would have loved to see in their game. Borderlands 3’s crossplay goes way beyond just two platforms. The game can be played across Xbox One, Mac, Stadia, Xbox Series, the Epic Games Store, and Steam. On top of that, the studio threw in options for those who prefer to keep crossplay off.

Remasters, Remakes Always Give Hope
Borderlands 2 is part of the Handsome Collection, but even that is dated. A March 2015 release means the collection is over seven years old.
We bring the age up because studios constantly work on bringing those games back through remasters and remakes. The Handsome Collection could be considered the remaster of Borderlands 2, so maybe the next thing is a remake.
A remake would likely bring crossplay and all the cool features that the new Borderlands 3 version and recent spin-offs such as Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands have brought. But the studio could keep The Handsome Collection as the most recent Borderlands 2 version and instead work on Borderlands 4.
New Tales from the Borderlands and Film
There ain’t much on Borderlands 4, but fans of the series have been waiting on information for some time now. For now, fans have a new game in New Tales from the Borderlands, set for a release on October 21st.
The game comes nearly seven years after the first episode release of Tales from the Borderlands. The second game comes straight from Gearbox after the closure of Telltale Games in 2018. Telltale Games made the first release under license from Gearbox.
There’s a lot more coming from the series, though. The gearbox is reportedly working on a film adaptation for the popular role-playing first-person shooter video games. The movie reportedly has a lineup of stars, including Kevin Hart and Cate Blanchett.
